Teachers will soon be able to gain Chartered Status based on Catholic Social Teaching (CST) through a new professional accreditation programme.

In April 2026 the Chartered College of Teaching (CCT) is set to launch the Chartered Teacher Status Catholic Educator specialism, the first of its kind, developed by the CCT and the Formatio partnership of Catholic dioceses, multi-academy trusts and universities.

The two-year pilot scheme will see candidates complete tailored assessments for class teachers, in evidence-informed practice; teaching practice; education research and inquiry; and professional knowledge, with the support of an experienced Catholic educator mentor.

Multi-academy trusts participating in the pilot scheme include the St Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, and Holy Spirit Catholic Multi Academy, both in the Archdiocese of Birmingham; Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, in the Diocese of Nottingham; and Plymouth CAST, in the Diocese of Plymouth.

Paul Barber, Director of the Catholic Education Service, said: “To achieve Chartered Teacher Status rooted in CST is a remarkable opportunity for our sector, to help provide pupils in our schools with the very best Catholic education. We are called to embrace CST in our lives, and I would highly recommend Catholic teachers to join the Chartered College through this route.”

Professor Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive Officer of the CCT, said: “We are delighted that teachers working in Catholic education will have the opportunity to be recognised for an advanced standard of teaching practice, and become the first teachers in the country to be recognised with this new Chartered Teacher specialism. Our team has already benefited hugely from the expertise of the multi-academy trusts on the co-design group, and we look forward to offering this tailored pathway to Catholic educators across England and Wales.”

The Chartered College of Teaching is the professional body for teachers, providing career development, training, networking and accreditation for more than 45,000 members. The Chartered Teacher Catholic Educator specialism is open to all teachers in Catholic schools, colleges and academies, whether voluntary aided, maintained or academies.

Formatio supports the CES and diocesan schools commissions in implementing strategies for school leadership and governance, as commissioned by the Bishops in 2017.
